American Missionaries in the Ottoman Empire (1936-1769): This series returns to active circulation out-of-print works by American missionaries (including educators and physicians) written between 1850 and the early 1930s. These books describe various American enterprises in the Ottoman Empire, including American involvement with social reform (education, women’s and minority rights), conflicts and change within the missionary movement itself, and the evolving definition of America’s role in what would come to be called the Middle East. The authors frequently combine autobiography and personal commentary with their views of history and current events in the regions; as such, these works provide invaluable access to the temper of the times and to Americans’ sense of themselves and their role in the world.
Each book in the series includes an introduction by a scholar in the field providing biographical background about the author, publishing history of the volume, historical context of the work, reference to the work’s reception in its time, and critical commentary on the work itself.
