al-Machriq was (and still is) an Arabic-French periodical whose primary focus was Eastern Christian and Islamic topics in the Arab world. Its founder, the famous Jesuit Louis Cheikho (1859-1927), sought to use this periodical to foster a holistic intellectual discourse among scholars of Arab Christianity and Islam. Other topics covered in the journal included linguistics, Arabic literature, Middle Eastern minority religions and the secular intellectual movements of the Nahda (modern Arabic cultural renaissance). This hard-to-get journal contains numerous articles of great value, both for the enduring quality of their scholarship as well as for documenting the history of modern thought in the Arab world. The Gorgias reprint of all volumes of al-Machriq from 1898 to 1971 will make widely available for the first time a rare and exceptional resource for scholars of Eastern Christianity, Islam, and modern Arabic thought.
