This anthology of texts on Ottoman history was collected and written by Michel Balivet, professor at the University of Provence, and is the first of its kind. Despite the growing amount of scholarship on the history of the Ottoman Empire, there has previously not existed any survey of the significant primary sources in this field. This book is written in reply to this demand. Rather than being an exhaustive analysis, this collection of texts and excerpts offers a systematic overview of early Ottoman history stimulating the curiosity to learn more. The history of the Ottoman Empire stretches far and wide both in time and space, and a limitation of scope is inevitable. The texts selected for this anthology are written in the formative period of the first two centuries of the Empire, the earliest dating from 1302 and the latest from around 1590. Each excerpt is supplied with bibliographical references and with an introduction explaining the historical context. This book should benefit students of Ottoman history and scholars interested in extending their knowledge of primary sources.
