In the late nineteenth century, a renewed interest in Eastern Orthodoxy appeared among members of the Western church. Nowhere was this interest more keenly felt than in England, where the common outlook of Anglicanism and Orthodoxy was being realized. This brief introduction to Eastern Orthodoxy, published in that period, was written by an unnamed priest of the Church of England. It is a popular sketch of the history, doctrines, liturgies, and vestments of Orthodoxy. Illustrations of some vestments attest to the growing interest in the Oxford Movement taking place in England at the time. With an introduction by the Rev. Dr. Richard Littledale, this handy volume is a quick read that retains its currency even today. For the student of historical outlooks as well as for those who are interested in covering the basics of the Orthodox church, this little text remains a useful tool.
Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) was born and educated in Dublin. As a priest in the Tractarian tradition of the Church of England, he had a keen interest in the liturgies of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Littledale was also a noted hymn writer and translator.
