The autobiographical work attributed to St. Ephrem, the noted theologian of the Syrian Church in the Patristic period, is presented here in a critical edition. This document is the main source for the image of the saint as a hermit in a cave. Essential background and critical questions about the manuscript are addressed by Duval, followed by a critical edition of the Syriac text. Following the critical edition Duval translates the Testament into French. Eighteen of the twenty-eight strophes are discussed in further detail following the translation of the Testament.
M. Rubens Duval (1839-1911) was the foremost French authority on Syriac literature of his day. A renowned lexicographer, he published widely in the field of Syriac studies, and his works remain indispensable today.
