A Commentary upon the Gospel According to S. Luke by S. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria by Robert Payne Smith
As the title of this work broadly indicates, it is the translation into English of St. Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on the Gospel of Luke. This manuscript document had recently been acquired by Oxford University in Syriac. Payne Smith published an edition, but quickly realized that the work would largely go ignored if it were not translated into English. Cyril’s own interpretation of one of the Gospels focuses a crucial eye on a major source for understanding early Christianity.

A Grammar of the Malayalam Language by Joseph Peet
Based on years of personal experience in India, Joseph Peet’s grammar of Malayalam was the first attempt by a western scholar to document the language. Set out like a classical grammar of the period, Peet begins with an introduction to the language and the orthography. The parts of speech are each treated, followed by an account of the syntax. One of the official languages of India, Malayalam is spoken by about 37 million individuals, mostly in the state of Kerala in the southern part of the nation. For the historian interested in the history of the study of Malayalam, this grammar is a special find.

As testimony to the windfall represented by the Arabic contribution to Christian poetry, Cheikho brought together this two-volume collection of Arabic Christian poets. The first volume contains poems from before Islam, while the second is devoted to those coming during the Islamic period. Beginning with the poets of Yemen, volume one of the collection moves through the regions of Najd, Hijaz, the tribes of ‘Adnan and Rabi’a, and the poets of Iraq. Volume two divides the poets into eras, beginning with poets of the mukhadram, Ummayyad and Abbasid periods, and running through the late nineteenth century. In addition to a selection of vocalized Arabic poetry, this substantial collection contains a biography of each poet included, as well as commentary on the individual poems. Ubiquitously referred to as a source for Christianity in an Islamic context, this set would be welcome in any Arabist’s library.

Louis Cheikho (1859-1927) was a Jesuit priest in Lebanon and was one-time director of the Bibliothèque Oriental in Beirut. Fr. Cheikho collected poetry during the course of his travels to acquire manuscripts throughout Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Turkey.
