"Blessed is He who has brought Adam from Sheol" Christ's Descent to the Dead in the Theology of Saint Ephrem the Syrian by
Buchan’s work is an examination of the theological use of the doctrine of Christ's descent to the dead in the works of Saint Ephrem the Syrian (ca. 306-373 C.E.). Ephrem's conception of Christ's descent to Sheol provides us with an important and distinctive vision of the significance of this salvific event. Ephrem's use of Semitic and non-Western poetic forms and structures as a mode of theological discourse, coupled with his preference for imagery and symbolism rather than definition, resulted in a variety of vivid depictions of Christ's descent to Sheol. The doctrine is shown to be an integral and multifaceted component of Ephrem's theology.

Widely cited as a source for reliable information on "Nestorian" missionaries, this study begins with a history of the church in Persia (Iran) and its missionary focus. "Nestorianism" is traced from Arabia through central and eastern Asia and finally into southern India. Stewart addresses the absorption of the "Nestorians" by the Roman Catholic Church in Asia and assesses the by-products of its "Nestorian" heritage. Stewart was writing in the 1820s, and he addresses the situation of the church in his own day. This dynamic account of the often misunderstood "Nestorian" work has become a main reference for those interested in the question of the missionary zeal of the Church of the East.

John Stewart, M.A., Ph.D., was a missionary with the United Free Church of Scotland Mission in Madras for 35 years. He served as Secretary to the Madras Mission Council. Nestorian Missionary Enterprise is his most celebrated work.
