Buy this book together with The Foreign Vocabulary of the Quran by Arthur Jeffery
Peyron’s lexicon is the classic Coptic-Latin dictionary of the early twentieth century. It is of special historical importance because of the association of Peyron with Champollion, Napoleon’s epigrapher on his Egyptian voyage. Placed so early in the dawn of Egyptian studies, Peyron sheds light from an eye undimmed by the subsequent decades of scholarship.+This handbook of foreign loan words in the Arabic of the Quran is set up in dictionary format. Each word is given in Arabic and in transliteration, followed by an extensive definition. As useful today as when it was first published, this volume will be welcomed by students of Arabic and especially those who are concerned with its relationship to foreign languages.Save $59.25

A Commentary upon the Gospel According to S. Luke by S. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria by Robert Payne Smith
As the title of this work broadly indicates, it is the translation into English of St. Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on the Gospel of Luke. This manuscript document had recently been acquired by Oxford University in Syriac. Payne Smith published an edition, but quickly realized that the work would largely go ignored if it were not translated into English. Cyril’s own interpretation of one of the Gospels focuses a crucial eye on a major source for understanding early Christianity.

A Greek Fragment of Tatian's Diatessaron from Dura by Carl Kraeling
Discovered in 1933, a fragment of Tatian’s Diatessaron is published here with critical apparatus, a facsimile, and a transcription. The fragment, a discarded portion of a scroll with 14 surviving lines of text, was likely used in the worship of a third century C.E. chapel excavated at Dura Europos.

The History of Tur Abdin by Aphram I Barsoum
Until now this first insider-history of Tur Abdin has been unavailable to non-Semitic readers. Written by Patriarch Ignatius Aphram Barsoum in Syriac, this history of the mountainous region in southeastern Asia Minor called Tur Abdin has not found wide readership because of language barriers. This new edition produced by Gorgias Press is a trilingual edition: the original Syriac, Arabic, and English translations.

Peyron’s Lexicon Copticum is the classic Coptic lexicon of the early twentieth century. Coptic entries are offered in Latin translation with constant reference to the classical sources from which the definitions are drawn. An index of Latin words provides a useful resource for those seeking a particular definition of a known word from the corpus. Still an essential source for historical comparison, Peyron’s lexicon stands out as one of the formative works in Coptic studies. This erudite study of the Coptic language has retained its value for over a century and will be a standard reference for years to come.

Amedeo Peyron (1785-1870) is largely remembered as a papyrologist. His career, however, reveals considerable interest. Peyron was Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Turin and a clergyman. He also served as the Chancellor of the University and as a member of the City Council of Turin.
