Few non-Israelites had the impact on ancient Palestine that equaled that of Sennacherib. Concerned to trace the history of the invasion of Sennacherib, Honor compares and contrasts the various historical sources of the incident. Among the Assyrian records he considers the Annals of Sennacherib, inscriptions, and a seal impression. These are then subjected to a critical analysis. The biblical account of the invasion, narrated in both 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, is likewise examined. Honor also devotes a chapter to the prophecies of Isaiah concerning this act of war, including his anti-Assyrian prophecies. This is a thorough exploration of a critical historical event narrated only too briefly in the Hebrew Bible.
Leo Lazarus Honor (1894-1956) was a prominent Jewish educator in Philadelphia and first professor of education at Dropsie College (now the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania). He is credited with having helped to define Jewish education as a profession in America. Honor also wrote a commentary on the book of 2 Kings.
