Nancy Demand applies the outlook of gender studies to ancient history with the resultant concepts of participation and power. A distinctive North Syrian building type, the bit hillani continues to fascinate archaeologists and students of the ancient Near East. Early on in the history of archaeology in this part of the world, German teams began the systematic excavation that has led to many of the present understandings of life in the sphere of Mesopotamian influence. In this brief but informative study of the excavation of Zinjirli, Thomas Friedrich illustrates his ability with both texts and archaeology. Primarily an exploration of the remains of this site, the author focuses on the bit hillani as a particular building type as he considers its archaeological history and reconstructs its potential complete form. A useful study for those beginning in ancient Near Eastern archaeology, this booklet will be valued by all who look to the history of Syria in reconstructing the world of antiquity.
Thomas Friedrich (1855-1927) taught at the University of Innsbruck.
