The Gospels mention that Jesus had twelve male disciples who aided Him in His earthly mission of proclaiming the Gospel. But were Jesus’ helpers only men? Convinced that women played an important role in assisting Jesus’ preaching and proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven, Tuma al-Khuri has written a book highlighting twelve different females who appear in the Gospel text—the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Lazarus, the Samaritan woman, and the Syro-Phoenician woman, among others. Each woman receives an individual chapter. Al-Khuri begins each chapter by quoting the Gospel passages where the particular woman appears but then goes from there to put flesh and bones on what can sometimes be a sparse textual witness to the woman’s activity: he creatively re-tells the story of her interaction with Jesus from a first-person perspective and vividly draws us into the tumult of first-century Palestinian society.
