Tell Halaf by Baron Max von Oppenheim
The site of Tell Halaf was located by Baron von Oppenheim while on a mission to survey the land for the Baghdad Railway. The Baron returned some years later to excavate the mound, and this monograph is his considered statement of the site’s importance. Setting the stage with a narrative of the discovery of the tell, von Oppenheim proceeds to describe the structures, monumental statuary and smaller objects recovered from the dig. Lavishly illustrated with over 85 illustrations and maps, this volume contains a storehouse of knowledge on ancient Syria, at that time part of the cultural continuum of Mesopotamia.

The Holy Spirit in the Syrian Baptismal Tradition by Sebastian Brock
A fitting contribution to Gorgias Liturgical Studies, Sebastian Brock’s The Holy Spirit in the Syrian Baptismal Tradition is a sensitive and evocative treatment of an issue key to any liturgical tradition—that of the role of the Holy Spirit in worship. With a keen awareness of the tradition of Syrian Christianity, Brock begins his exploration with the concept and the role of the Holy Spirit in the Syriac Bible, symbols of the Spirit, the sources used to glean this information, and how it ties in with the Eucharist and Pentecost, as well as baptism itself and the subsequent practice of anointing.

The Gospels mention that Jesus had twelve male disciples who aided Him in His earthly mission of proclaiming the Gospel. But were Jesus’ helpers only men? Convinced that women played an important role in assisting Jesus’ preaching and proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven, Tuma al-Khuri has written a book highlighting twelve different females who appear in the Gospel text—the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Lazarus, the Samaritan woman, and the Syro-Phoenician woman, among others. Each woman receives an individual chapter. Al-Khuri begins each chapter by quoting the Gospel passages where the particular woman appears but then goes from there to put flesh and bones on what can sometimes be a sparse textual witness to the woman’s activity: he creatively re-tells the story of her interaction with Jesus from a first-person perspective and vividly draws us into the tumult of first-century Palestinian society. Appended to the volume is a lecture given by al-Khuri in 2001 and a preface written by Bishop Gregorios Yohanna Ibrahim offers information on the fascinating life of the author.
