When researching the fascinating religions of ancient Rome, Réville’s study is frequently found. Affording a thorough introduction to Roman religious society of the third century from the stoicism of Marcus Aurelius to the syncretism of Severus, Réville offers insight on every page. Syncretism dominates his discussion of the first half of the third century, beginning from the elements of the Greco-Roman religion and culture, through the cult of the emperors, into original elements of the syncretism and the influence of Mithraism. The next topic addressed is pagan syncretism, from classic to superstition. Ending the first section of the book is a consideration of the love of mystery on the part of the ancients. Moving on to the religious reform under the Severides, Réville demonstrates the Neopythagorean aspect of the reformation. Obviously, this allows for a comparison of significant figures such as Apollonius of Tyana and Jesus. Noting that reform stretched throughout the empire, Réville seeks other influences. Eastern religions, introducing Baal to Rome and even the cult of the saints play a role in this development. Yielding lasting results, this study of ancient religion will be welcomed by eager readers interested in the history of religions.

Jean Réville (1854-1908) was a French theologian. He studied at Geneva, Berlin, and Heidelberg before becoming a professor of patristics at the Sorbonne.
