St. Catharine’s Convent at Mount Sinai possesses one of the richest monastic libraries in the world. It contains manuscripts written in Greek, Syriac, Arabic, and Georgian. The collection includes Codex Sinaiticus of the Old and New Testament, discovered by Tischendorf in 1844, and the palimpsest containing the Old Syriac version of the Four Gospels, discovered by Mrs. Agnes Smith Lewis in 1892. In 1922 and 1923, Hatch and J. Rendel Harris photographed hundreds of images from the collection, and made them available in 1932-1934 as leaf plates. These rare images are now published for the very first time in bound form in this two-volume set. Each photograph, digitally enhanced by Gorgias Press, is accompanied by a detailed description.
