Allen offers a series of inscriptions from Palestine copied by the Rev. Dr. Selah Merrill in the years I875-77, in the course of journeys undertaken under the auspices of the American Palestine Exploration Society. An account of these journeys may be found in his book " East of the Jordan" (New York, 1881). Allen has edited these inscriptions and provided commentary where Merrill was lacking, giving an accessible series of inscriptions that provide information and context to Palestine under the Roman empire. Students of early Christianity, Roman Palestine, and the Roman empire will all find it an interesting and useful piece.
