Patriarch Timothy I was a prolific author as evidenced by the many references to the variety of his corpus in Syriac literature. While he is most well known for theological and philosophical essays, most of his writing endeavors were devoted to letter writing. In the three articles combined here, Oskar Braun provides a discussion of Timothy’s epistolary legacy and provides the Syriac text, along with a German translation, for several of Timothy’s letters. In the first article, Braun includes a brief discussion of Timothy’s life from the information found in the often conflicting and unreliable vitae, including a valuable sketch of Timothy’s political, ecclesiastical, and civic activities. Following this discussion of Timothy’s historical circumstances, Braun provides a list of Timothy’s known written works and the references to these works in later sources. Braun concludes the article by listing the titles and/or subject matter of fifty-eight of the letters which are contained in one manuscript. In the following articles, Braun presents the texts of letters 43, 10, 16, 17 and 18. Along with these texts, Braun includes a brief discussion of their recipients and the occasions for their composition.
