It is well known that the Greek philosophical material that was eventually translated into and preserved in Arabic came first through a middle-stage translation into Syriac. However, despite this knowledge, the effects of Greek philosophical schools on Syriac thought is often overlooked. Anton Baumstark publishes here the portion of Theodore bar Koni’s Scholia that deals with the various Greek philosophical traditions. In Theodore’s work, the discussion is split into six sections, each dealing with a particular school of thought, including Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, the Epicureans and the Naturalists. Baumstark provides an introduction to this text, including a brief discussion of each school of thought and its apparent affect within the Syriac tradition. Baumstark presents the Syriac text of Theodore’s work along with a Latin translation. There is also an appendix included with this article in which Baumstark introduces and discusses the first nine books of Theodore’s Scholia that was published in a previous edition of Oriens Christianus.
