Kayser here offers the Syriac text and German translation of a set of answers given by the famous Jacob of Edessa to questions by the priest Addai. While these are not canons in the strictest sense of the term, they most certainly tend strongly in that direction and may in fact reflect canons properly so-called. Kayser provides a preface on the text itself and also an introduction that covers Jacob’s life and writings and discusses the question of the authenticity of the Canons ascribed to him, and the questions and answers here edited are also accompanied with an extensive commentary. The Syriac text is printed with notes on questionable readings and marginal annotations. This important resource for Christianity in the eighth century will be welcomed by church historians and scholars of Syriac literature.
