A commentary on the Revelation of Saint John by a distinguished Lutheran minister. Seiss holds that all of Revelation, after the messages to the seven churches at the beginning, deals with the end of time; his commentary, therefore, is a future history; the seven churches signify, for numverological reasons, all churches, which have decayed in every age since the Apostles. This is not only of interest for students of Seiss's unusual future history and idiosyncratic politics (despite disliking the Roman Church, he accepts Abbe Barruel's account of the French Revolution; so Mirabeau ranks with Nero as a foreshadowing of Antichrist, whose slogan will be "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity"); it is also a useful guide to interpretations of Revelation as a forecast of world history: In defending his interpretation of the fourth trump (which extinguishes a third part of the sun, moon, and stars) as an astronomical phenomenon, he answers - and so lists- the interpretations as the medieval church darkening counsel and Odovacer dimming the glory of the Roman Empire. | |
