The Book of the Bee by the Church of the East writer Solomon of Basra (fl. early 13th cent.) is a unique survey of biblical narratives and sacred history. Schoenfelder here gives an annotated Latin translation of the text prefaced by a brief introduction. His text is based on a manuscript at Munich with Solomon’s book in parallel Syriac and Arabic (Garshuni) columns, and both of these are taken into account in the translation and notes. The Syriac and Arabic words in the notes are printed in Aramaic (Hebrew) script. The Book of the Bee is a witness to later thinking in the Church of the East about the Bible, theology, and history, and Schoenfelder’s annotated translation will be of interest to scholars working in these fields.
