A remarkable production of the discussion between theology and nineteenth-century geology; this book was one of the first great popular works on the new geology which holds the earth to be vastly old; it presents the new science as consistent with, indeed as a proof of, revelation. It centers on the iron-rich Silurian and Devonian formation of Scotland and South Wales, but serves as an introduction to the whole geology of Britain. First written as a series of articles in 1840, it was noted for the vivacity of its style. Miller expanded it through several editions; Gorgias reprints the posthumous edition of 1858, which adds Miller's essays, including his Presidential Address to the Geological Society: "Geological Evidence in Favour of Revealed Religion".
