Through a number of sources, the author advocates spiritual revival. He describes the proper revival: solemn and not rapturous, permanent in the individual and in effect, producing humility and love for mankind, connected to “evangelical truth,” produced from the Holy Spirit, and producing the “fruits of holy living.” He explains why revivals should be common in the United States. Firstly, the experimental American government will fail without revivals to foster respect for law. Belief in “true religion” is the only way to unite the country. The author believes that “NOTHING but purely moral influence obstructs the passage of the whole nation to the gulph of Atheism.” Revivals are needed to keep pace with population growth and must follow money going from East to West. Revivals are needed to maintain societies such as the author’s. Without them, seminaries will crumble. He also spurns false revivals. Table of Contents | |
