The Vedas are a collection of Sanskrit texts from ancient India. These texts comprise the most ancient texts of Hindu scripture. Maurice Bloomfield writes this article in order to clarify some of the problems that have been encountered during the translation of these works. His work centers mostly on the Rigveda through which he presents his theories on issues of haplology, various idiomatic wordings, and problematic translations. For example, Bloomfield demonstrates how the word “chadis” acquired an r sound through a blend with a word of similar meaning “carma.” The article will be of interest to anyone studying Vedic literature. | |
