This collection of articles explores the state of relations between the Spanish and Ottoman Empires during the time of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). The period in which Cervantes lived is often reckoned to be that in which the two empires were at their height and during which their ‘great declines’ began. However accurate, the Ottoman and Spanish states dominated the Eastern and Western halves of the Mediterranean respectively and fought – either directly or through proxies – for supremacy in the sea. This volume seeks to understand Ottoman-Spanish relations more closely and contains the contributions of several Turkish, Spanish and Algerian historians.
