An exact reproduction of this unique manuscript, from the Yale library. Ibn Kammunah was a Jewish physician in thirteenth-century Baghdad, who also wrote a treatise on the three Abrahamic religions; this caused a riot, and the authorities smuggled him out of the city in a barrel, while promising that the blasphemous Jew would be burned. The treatise offers original arguments for the immortality of the soul, based on purely ontological grounds of the nature and timing of causation, not on any scriptural authority; as Ibn-Kammunah himself notes, this is original. It also ends with a blessing upon Mohammed. The manuscript, in a beautiful cusive hand, was transcribed directly from the author's copy, as the colophon shows. | |
