The ceremony of the clothing monks is celebrated ritually much like the ordination of bishops, priests, and deacons. Thus, there is a unique Syriac liturgy for this ceremony of inducting new monks into the monastic life. In the present work, Abbot Francis Acharya presents a translation and study of the liturgy for this clothing ritual. Acharya’s survey of the liturgy takes place in three parts: an examination of the structure and individual parts, an examination of the “four actors” involved in the “drama” of the ritual: God, the Rish Dairo, the community, and the candidate, and an examination of the monastic charism.
