In the early nineteenth century, Horatio Southgate traveled to the Middle East under the direction of the Foreign Missions Committee of the Protestant Episcopal Church of America. His journey was essentially an exploratory mission, testing the potential for future mission efforts. The present work, presented in two volumes, is Southgate’s personal travelogue, in which he describes the journey in detail. Southgate’s journey begins in Constantinople and continues through many sites throughout the Middle East. Southgate occasionally remarks on the communities of Christians that he comes across, and focuses particularly on their relationship to their Muslim neighbors and rulers. | |
