This book comprises a selection of articles by Irene Melikoff, professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg, on the Anatolian and Turkish Sufism. An extensive review of Sufism is presented in articles on Bektasism, Alevism and Heterodox Islam, whereas the focus is on social and cultural issues in articles on customs and festivals. With Anatolia as the main centre of focus, the writer also refers to neighbouring areas such as Azerbaijan and Bulgaria and follows the origins of the Anatolian Sufism in as far as Central Asia. A lively and an extensive account of Sufism in and around Anatolia is presented by one of the most competent scholars of the subject.
