One of the pioneering historians studying the tahrir defterleri (the tax registers of the Ottoman Empire) is Dr. Heath W. Lowry, who also coined the term ’Defterology’ to denote the study of Ottoman tax registers, which encompass invaluable information for the history of the early empire. This book comprises a selection of his essays discussing the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th and 16th centuries on the basis of tahrir defterleri. In addition to an analysis of the methods, available evidences and potentials of Defterology, he provides a glimpse into the social life of the time, particularly focusing on the demography and Ottoman administration in the territories conquered from the Byzantine Empire.
