This book comprises essays by Prof. Donald Quataert presenting an excellent economic history of the later Ottoman Empire. While discussing various aspects of the Ottoman economy from agriculture to household production and from manufacturing to mining, Prof. Quataert, with the aim of what he calls writing the history from below, also provides insights into the lives of the ‘oppressed and weaker’ members of the labour force such as peasants, artisans and women, who are often under-represented in the written records. Also with an emphasis on conflict in social relations and class struggle, this book draws a comprehensive picture of the Ottoman economy between 1730 and 1914. Table of Contents
