This book composed of 21 previously published articles, offers a multifaceted exploration of the interplay of religious, regional and national identities among the Albanians. The articles are grouped into four sections, chronologically stretching from the late Ottoman era to the period after the fall of the communist states. Drawing on Benedict Anderson’s emphasis on print capitalism as a condition for nationalism, in the first part, Clayer studies the importance of the printed press of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century for the development of Albanian nationalism. In the second part she investigates the connections between Bektashism and Albanian nationalism, using the concept of invented traditions. The third part is dedicated to studies of areas inhabited by Albanians where the Muslim influence has been Sunni rather than Bektashi, examining how this affects the Albanian identity in the area. Finally, Clayer presents articles concerned with the identity changes following a much more recent period of crisis, namely the collapse of the communist states in the 1990s, including an analysis of the Islamic Albanian press.
