This volume presents selected articles by Evangelia Balta, expert on the history of the Greek minority in the Ottoman Empire, published between 1986 and 1996. The articles concentrate on two subjects of dear interest to the author; the economic and social history of the Ottoman Empire, and the unique culture of the population from the Cappadocia area. The volume is thematically divided into three sections. The first section investigates various questions related to economical and social history of the 15th to the 19th century, from taxation in 17th century Santorini to the demography of the population in the Sancak of Euripos. In the second section, Balta directs our interest to the written culture of the Karamanlis, the Greek Orthodox Turcophone population of the Cappadocia area of Anatolia. The last section of the volume offers some guidance to researchers on doing archival research in the field of Ottoman history. The articles are written in English and French.
