One of the first anthologies of Syriac writing in English, by an Irish scholar, who dedicates it to Charles II's Queen, in the hope that its arguments will help confound Presbyterianism. Several commentaries and treatises of Dionysius Bar Salibi (one, on the Evangelists, is given in Latin) quote and summarize Ephraem, John of Dara, and other Syriac and Greek writers; Loftus also translates lengthy extracts from the Histories and the scholia of Gregory Barhebraeus and from other Oriental languages (including the Letter of Abgar, from Persian) and the Armenian Creed) make up a charming volume, with an introduction by Loftus chiefly on Bar Salibi's theological value and his sources. An invaluable light on what Syriac writing was available to the seventeenth century; some of it has not been translated since. | |
