Mar Jacob of Serugh wrote advice to his 6th century contemporaries in the mimre On the Singles. Griffith discusses the mimre's reflections of Syrian monastic development. Following a biography and detailed literary analysis, Griffith examines the broader context of regional monastic literature for Mar Jacob's possible influences. We learn that amid the political and philosophical controversies of his time, Mar Jacob's On the Singles cautions that it is better to abandon the world. He draws from earlier monastic thinkers including Mar Ephraem and Evagrius of Pontus.
