Gorgias Historical Dictionaries (ISSN 1935-3189):

This exciting new series features important reprints of historical dictionaries to increase their availability among the academic community. Historical dictionaries contain material that is often unavailable in more modern editions. Early insights into languages, although foundational, are often forgotten with the appearance of more advanced studies. These early insights, however, remain important for understanding how present views originated, and also assist in assessing the more recent developments in the study of the language. Locating and accessing these early dictionaries may consume considerable time for busy scholars. In making such dictionaries available at reasonable costs, the Gorgias Historical Dictionaries series will meet a constant need in the academic community.

The famous Persian dictionary of Sayyid Abdurrashid, now quite difficult to locate, is an historic dictionary to which linguists still make reference. Abd ur-Rashid was an influential scholar in the Mughal Empire during its period of supremacy. One of two dictionaries compiled by Abd ur-Rashid, this lexicon, presented entirely in Classic Persian, this historic achievement marks a turning point in Persian lexicography and ranks as one of the cultural and literary achievements of the seventeenth century. The two volumes of this historic dictionary are here bound together, providing an affordable alternative to earlier two-part editions. More...
