Deities and Angels of the Ancient World (ISSN 1939-4136):

Edited by Steven W. Holloway

The three major monotheistic religions developed among cultures immersed in polytheistic worldviews. In these thought-worlds populated with a range of beings on a continuum between human and divine, many categories of supernatural creatures established a place in religious outlooks of antiquity. This series offers studies of those categories of beings that came to be known as deities and angels of the ancient world. The present-day conception of the angelic world can be traced back to the understanding of a world populated by supernatural entities allowed to continue into Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Works in this series offer explorations into and possible explanations of those beings known as angels and deities in the ancient world that had some survival into the historic religions of the monotheistic tradition.

Using historical sources and ingenious detective work, Seaich suggested that the cherubim in Solomon’s temple were portrayed in a copulatory embrace. Aware that this thesis was not entirely novel, the author built a substantial case in its favor and traced the influence of the atonement (at-one-ment) theology behind the concept through the periods of Israel’s wisdom school, into the New Testament and Gnostic sources, up through the Middle Ages.
