Title:The Complete Works of Philo of Alexandria: A Key-Word-In-Context Concordance
Availability:In Print
Publisher:Gorgias Press

This Key-Word-In-Context concordance is a result of The Norwegian Philo Concordance Project. It is a printout of a database containing all the Greek words in the writings of Philo of Alexandria, main fragments included. Philo of Alexandria was a first-century Hellenistic Jewish interpreter of the Law of Moses and philosopher studied today both as a source for Greek philosophy, Second Temple Judaism and as a forerunner of early Christian thoughts.

All Greek words of Philo have been gathered, tagged and lemmatized. The database consists of 437,433 tokens (text forms) and more than 14,000 different lemmas (the chosen entry forms), and is built on four major text editions of Philo (Cohn-Wendland, Colson, Petit, and Paramelle). The concordance project was initiated already in the late 1960s when the use of computers in the humanities was still in its infancy and has now proven its value. The participants have been Roald Skarsten, Peder Borgen, and Kåre Fuglseth.

The text database has been published in various ways, cf. The Philo Index (Eerdmans/Brill, 2000) and different electronic versions. This edition, The Complete Works of Philo of Alexandria: A Key-Word-In-Context Concordance, is the ultimate printed form for any concordance with every occurrence of all Greek words. Each lemma is alphabetically ordered and presented within its context and thus designed to aid with research on Philo of Alexandria.

Roald Skarsten is Professor emeritus at the University of Bergen, Norway. Peder Borgen is Professor emeritus at the University of Trondheim (NTNU), Norway, and Kåre Fuglseth is Associate Professor at Bodø Regional University, Norway. They have all published books and articles on a number of issues related to Philo of Alexandria, Greek philosophy, biblical studies and computer technology used in the humanities.
