An Introduction to Syriac Studies by Sebastian Brock
This Introduction aims to provide basic guidance to important areas of Syriac studies. The relevance of Syriac studies to a variety of other fields is explored. A brief orientation to the history of Syriac literature is offered, and Syriac is set within the context of the other Aramaic dialects. A thorough discussion on important tools (Instrumenta Studiorum) is presented; topics include grammars, dictionaries, the Bible in Syriac, histories of Syriac literature, bibliographical aids and relevant series, periodicals, and encyclopedias. This Introduction should prove useful both for the student beginning Syriac studies and for scholars working in adjacent fields.

Al-Lubab by Gabriel Cardahi
A historical dictionary between two Semitic languages, Cardahi’s Syriac-Arabic dictionary was among the first attempts to bring together the classical languages of Eastern Christianity and Islam. Consistently referred to by subsequent Arabists, this lexicon has become a well-known reference book.

Analecta Syriaca by Paul de Lagarde
A rare edition of Lagarde’s Syriac ephemera, this volume is a linguist’s delight. Introduced in Latin and Arabic, the descriptions and annotations to Syriac manuscripts that constitute this book will seldom be found elsewhere. The various Syriac codices included in the collection are presented in Syriac without translation. For the student of Syriac who is seeking the authentic experience of reading Syriac materials, this study will be a treasury of material. Over the decades, Legarde’s works have become increasingly difficult to locate, and Gorgias Press is pleased to be able to offer this collectable selection again.

Eastern Crossroads: Essays on Medieval Christian Legacy by Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala
This volume contains papers from the First International Congress on Eastern Christianity held in Córdoba, Spain, November 2005. The encounter of medieval Christian writers with several linguistic traditions through the Middle Ages produced one of the most important branches of Middle Eastern literature. This encounter not only changed the nature of the respective writings throughout time, but also influenced considerably the development of the legacies transmitted by the writers and the scholars of various Eastern Christian churches. The volume illustrates the strength of Christian cultural life through the Middle Ages under different socio-political situations, including the context of a predominantly Islamic culture.

A massive work of erudition, Smith’s Thesaurus Syriacus has stood the test of time. Rendering Syriac into the scholarly Latin of the day, this dictionary made Syriac available to scholars of the western world. Still utilized for its thoroughness and authority, this lexicon, including the posthumously prepared supplement in English, is now being made available in a three-volume edition that includes the essential 1927 supplement.

Robert Payne Smith (1819-1895) was Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University. He later went on to become the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. The Thesaurus Syriacus was his most noted publication.
