| | The Acts of Saint George and the Story of his Father by George Kiraz One of the most enduring of the saints, Saint George has seldom failed to capture the imagination of Christian readers, both ancient and modern. The Acts of Saint George, originally written in Greek, quickly spread to many linguistic traditions in the church of late antiquity. Presented here in vocalized Syriac and Arabic, the original text of the Acts is made easily accessible to readers of these languages. A detailed introduction in English summarizes the hagiography for those unacquainted with the Semitic languages. The account follows the hagiographic practice of describing the trials, steadfast faith, and martyrdom of the saint. Also included is the story of the father of Saint George, recorded in Syriac. |

Kyriakos, a ninth-century Patriarch of Alexandria, was an influential figure in the history of the Syriac Monophysite Church. Yet, despite his influence, little is known of his life or his works. Previously, the chief sources for his life were the chronicles of Bar Hebraeus and Michael the Great. Thus, Karl Kaiser’s introduction to the life and influence of Kyriakos in the present article provides a great service to scholars by making this information more broadly available. This introduction includes a brief discussion of Kyriakos’s role in the dogmatic controversies of his time. Kaiser also publishes the Syriac text, accompanied by a Latin translation, of a liturgy attributed to Kyriakos. Kaiser notes that this liturgy is important for two reasons: first, it is one of the earliest liturgies specific to the Syriac Monophysite tradition; and second, the text is important for historical comparison with the development of contemporaneous liturgies.
