The first contribution to this booklet is Lagarde’s analysis of the Coptic manuscripts of the Göttingen library. In addition to describing the manuscripts, he provides data concerning the content, including the biblical passages slated for various liturgical seasons, in keeping with the character of the material. To this is attached an article on selections of the Coptic translation of the Old Testament. Here annotated extracts of the Bible are presented in their original Coptic script, along with relevant apparatus by the author. |
| | The Coptic Liturgy by C. Hammond C. E. Hammond's Antient Liturgies provided a valuable resource at an early stage in comparative liturgical studies. Free of extensive critical apparatus, Antient Liturgies presents a collection of historic forms of worship from the Western, Eastern, and Oriental Churches. This extract from the book focuses on the Coptic liturgy. The origin of the liturgy goes back to the St. Cyril and St. Basil liturgies. Here the liturgy is presented in Latin. As an analytical introduction this early study continues to provide a broad overview of early Christian worship made available in an accessible and convenient format for students and scholars. |

The first issue of the Journal of the Canadian Society for Coptic Studies contains the papers presented in the First Annual Symposium of Coptic Studies held on 29 March 2008 at the University of Toronto. The attendance to this first symposium was a witness to the need and importance of such an initiative in this city. The purpose behind this venture was to bring together individuals interested in Coptic Studies and to create awareness among academics about the richness of Coptic heritage. Hence the name given to this first meeting “Coptic Heritage Ancient and Modern” expressed the wide range of topics presented at the Symposium: papers about Late Antique Egypt to contemporary studies about the Coptic community. This Journal, lays down a foundation of academic work for Coptologists in Canada and offers a window of opportunity to future young scholars interested in this field of studies. | |
