The long career of Jacob of Serugh as bishop provides insights into Scripture and tradition expected for homilies as well as information about his audience. In this publication, Harvey discusses Jacob of Serugh's concern for congregations to balance lifestyle and devotional obligations. Jacob of Serugh held laity and clergy to the same standards for this discipline. He voices frustration with his congregations' complacency, lack of participation, and carelessness. Further, Jacob emphasized active inclusion of his audience, welcoming people from the margins, and considered everyone important for the liturgical experience. While Jacob of Serugh directs his attention to a 6th century community, his value for an earnest effort is as timeless as ordinary grace.
