Georg Heinrich August Ewald (1803-1875) was one of the nineteenth century’s foremost Biblical scholars. His great appreciation for the work of medieval Jewish scholars in Biblical exegesis, Hebrew grammar, and lexicography is evident in his work, Syntax of the Hebrew Language of the Old Testament. Ewald’s work profited much by the great advances in linguistic knowledge derived from the comparative study of the Indo-European languages, especially an extensive application of phonetic and other philological principles, bringing Syntax of the Hebrew Language of the Old Testament nearer than its predecessors to the realm of an exact science, and contributing to its status as a classic.
