| | Introduction to the Grammar of Hebrew Poetry in Byzantine Palestine by Michael Rand This book investigates the interaction between grammatical norms and poetic technique on the basis of a corpus selected from the oeuvre of the payyetan Eleazar be-rabbi Qillir. As a basis for this investigation, a descriptive/comparative analysis of the Qillirian dialect is offered. The first portion of the work is a grammar devoted mainly to morphology and syntax. The second portion of the work is an investigation of the poetic norms, as well as rhetorical techniques employed by Qillir, together with an assessment of their impact on the grammar. The overall aim of the project is to design an analytical framework within which a self-conscious poetic dialect might be investigated. |
| | Three Mirrors for Two Biblical Ladies: The Queen of Sheba and Susanna in the Eyes of Jews, Christians, and Muslims by Fabrizio Angelo Pennacchietti The Queen of Sheba and the slandered Susanna are biblical figures who have seized the imagination of generations of Jews, Christians and Muslims in every age and land, taking on the image best fitted to their expectations. |
| | The New Syriac Primer by George Anton Kiraz A truly useful introduction to the Syriac language is a rare find. This practical initiation to the study of the ancient language of the Christian church speaks with clarity and authority. A fruitful integration of scholarly introduction and practical application, this primer is more than a simple grammar or syntactic introduction to the language. Written in a style designed for beginners, Kiraz avoids technical language and strives for a reader-friendly inductive approach. Readings from actual Syriac texts allow the student to experience the language first hand and the basics of the grammar of the language are ably explained. The book comes with a handy CD so that readers may listen to all reading sentences and text passages in the book. |
| | A Great Mystery: The Secret of the Jerusalem Temple by Eugene Seaich In this thoroughly provocative book, the late Eugene Seaich made a detailed study of the intractable mystery of the Jerusalem temple. Using historical sources and ingenious detective work, Seaich suggested that the cherubim in Solomon’s temple were portrayed in a copulatory embrace. Aware that this thesis was not entirely novel, the author built a substantial case in its favor and traced the influence of the atonement (at-one-ment) theology behind the concept through the periods of Israel’s wisdom school, into the New Testament and Gnostic sources, up through the Middle Ages. |

This volume contains a collection of papers on various aspects of the grammar of Neo-Aramaic, with special attention to the North Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialect group. The papers include descriptions of numerous hitherto undescribed dialects, including those of Tyare, Sat, Calla, Barwar, Karamlesh, Telkepe, Peshabur and those of the Aqra region. Some papers deal with diachronic issues and discuss the relationship of the modern dialects with earlier forms of Aramaic. Particular attention is given by some contributions to syntactic structure and function. The traditions of Neo-Aramaic Bible translation are studied in one paper.
Geoffrey Khan holds a Ph.D. in Semitic Languages, from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London (1984). He is currently Professor of Semitic Philology, at the University of Cambridge. In 1998, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy and in 2004 was awarded the Lidzbarski Gold Medal for Semitic Philology.
