Gregory Abulfaraj Bar Hebraeus was the most prolific Syriac writer of the thirteenth century, and wrote on every subejct imaginable. His Nomocanon, known in Syriac as Hudoye, covers canon and civil law. Over the course of forty chapters, the author covers topics such as the Church, baptism, chrismation, the sacraments, fasts, inheritance, commerce, and many other topics. The book remains a guide to the current canon law of many churches.
The current edition, edited by J. Çiçek, is based on five manuscript (Adiyaman, Qilleth, Beth `Ashiqa, and India). The Indian manuscript has been accepted by the Indian Supreme Court in a recent church dispute.
