Hill In the second century, well before the canonical gospels took their present form, Tatian wove from the four gospels and one or more Judaic-Christian gospels one harmonized account of the life of Christ, the Diatessaron. The Earliest Life of Christ is an English translation of the Diatessaron based on the Arabic version, itself a translation from the lost Syriac. |

| | St. Cyril of Alexandria, A New Testament Exegete by Lois Farag This study portrays Cyril of Alexandria as exegete and theologian through an examination of his Commentary on the Gospel John. It begins with an attempt to place Cyril and his commentary within their context. This work argues that Cyril wrote his Commentary on the Gospel of John early in his writing career, almost a decade before becoming bishop. Cyril’s commentary on the Johannine Gospel reveals his exegetical method and his strong Trinitarian theology. The commentary also focuses on the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: the indwelling of the Spirit is the beginning of the newness of life. |

Brooke Foss Westcott, noted for his foundational work on the canon of the New Testament, presented this series of lectures at Peterborough in 1880. Intended as a form of devotional instruction, Westcott applies his considerable knowledge to the eleven articles of the Apostles’ Creed. His notes on several broader subjects such as the ideas of religion, faith, divine fatherhood, the blood of Christ, and the communion of saints are added to his observations on the Creed. Also in this fourth edition Westcott included the texts of the Nicaean Creed and the Creed of Constantinople for ease of comparison.
Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901) was a highly regarded theologian and churchman. He eventually came to hold the prestigious Regis Professorship of Divinity at Cambridge University and was also elected as Bishop of Durham. A prolific writer of theological material, Westcott has left a legacy of many foundational volumes.
