Den Biesen elaborates a comprehensive approach that integrates a variety of methods into a genuinely theological methodology. He then proposes his own comprehensive understanding of the nature and merits of Ephrem’s symbolic thought. |
| | St. Cyril of Alexandria, A New Testament Exegete by Lois Farag This study portrays Cyril of Alexandria as exegete and theologian through an examination of his Commentary on the Gospel John. It begins with an attempt to place Cyril and his commentary within their context. This work argues that Cyril wrote his Commentary on the Gospel of John early in his writing career, almost a decade before becoming bishop. Cyril’s commentary on the Johannine Gospel reveals his exegetical method and his strong Trinitarian theology. The commentary also focuses on the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: the indwelling of the Spirit is the beginning of the newness of life. |

Mitchell This two-volume set of St. Ephraim’s refutations of Mani, Marcion, and Bardaisan is presented in a bilingual edition with the Syriac original and English translation. | | The Ascetical Homilies of Mar Isaac of Nineveh by Isaac of Nineveh St. Isaac of Nineveh, or, as he is sometimes known, St. Isaac the Syrian, was born in the region of modern Qatar and lived during the seventh century. Ordained as the bishop of Nineveh sometime between 661 and 681 CE, Isaac withdrew from his ecclesiastical office after only five months, retiring to live as a monastic hermit in the mountains of southeastern Iraq. Translated from their original Syriac into a number of other languages, St. Isaac’s spiritual writings have been read by Christian monastics for centuries. The present volume gives the original Syriac text edited by Paul Bedjan. |

This fulcrum of generally unobtainable writings is widely used as a resource for those Syriac documents which are often inaccessible. Containing a selection of the writings of St. Ephraem the Syrian, virtually all existent writings of Rabbula, the Bishop of Edessa, and hymns, songs, and homilies of Balai, as well as other Syrian works, this compendium has found a place in the libraries of serious Syriac scholars. Overbeck publishes these documents in Syriac along with a description of the codices found in the British Museum and the Bodleian Library. Complete with an explanatory Latin preface, this is a sourcebook no Syriac scholar can afford to ignore.
Julian Joseph Overbeck (1821-1905) was a German Catholic priest who converted to Lutheranism. Upon coming to England he was received into the Anglican Church. He was a strong supporter of dialogue and cooperation between Anglo-Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.
