Buy this book together with A Syriac Lexicon by Michael Sokoloff
This massive work of scholarly erudition is an authoritative Syriac lexicon that is essential for all students of the language. Now available with an English introduction, this monumental lexicographical work is of exceptional utility.+The second edition of Carl Brockelmann's Lexicon Syriacum, published in 1928, is the best dictionary of Syriac ever written. However, its Latin language and the ordering of words according to triliteral Semitic roots make its use difficult for most students and scholars. This revised edition by Sokoloff renders meanings in English, arranges words alphabetically, and includes many useful tools on a CD.Save $105.38

A History of Christian Missions in China by Kenneth Latourette
Starting with the religious background of China, Latourette probes why Christianity appealed to the Chinese and then launches into a detailed history of its development. He considers how Christianity began before and coped under the Mongol Dynasty and then the incursion of the Roman Catholic Missions. Briefly considering the Russian Orthodox interest in Chinese missions, he moves on to what is clearly his main concern in the Protestant influx in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Considering the main events of China’s history in relation to the European powers of the day, he considers how Christianity fared into the early nineteenth century.

The Bible in Syriac by F. Burkitt
Originally delivered as one of the St. Margaret’s Lectures for 1904, the contents of this booklet are focused on aspects of the Syriac-speaking Church. Extracted from Burkitt’s book Early Eastern Christianity, the second lecture proposes a theory of how the Syriac Bible was compiled. Burkitt considers the role of the Peshitta, the Diatessaron, and the four Gospels and how their history at Edessa suggests that the Syriac Bible appeared.

Mélodies Liturgiques by Jules Jeannin
The classic exploration of Syriac liturgical melodies, the work of Dom Jeannin has no rivals. Beginning with a discussion of the nature of Beth Gazo, the treasury of chants, this work provides a careful introduction to the various types of liturgical music found in the church. Homilies in strophic form, the popular poetry of the fifth-century qole, antiphonal psalms, anthems, melismatic hymns or litanies, and melodies from Mosul are just part of the service music and hymnody discussed in the introduction and presented with their melodies in Syriac.

The Bible in the Syriac Tradition (English Version) by Sebastian Brock
This is a basic introduction to the various Syriac translations of the Bible and the ways in which they were used in the Syriac tradition. After an initial discussion of the general problems of biblical translation, the different surviving Syriac translations are outlined, as well as biblical manuscripts, lectionaires, printed editions, and translations. A reception history of the Syriac Bible covers the ways in which it has been interpreted, the commentary tradition, its use in preaching, in liturgy, and in spirituality. An appendix offers some comparative samples (in translation) to illustrate some of the differences between the different Syriac translations.

A massive work of erudition, Smith’s Thesaurus Syriacus has stood the test of time. Rendering Syriac into the scholarly Latin of the day, this dictionary made Syriac available to scholars of the western world. Still utilized for its thoroughness and authority, this lexicon, including the posthumously prepared supplement in English, is now being made available in a three-volume edition that includes the essential 1927 supplement.

Robert Payne Smith (1819-1895) was Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University. He later went on to become the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. The Thesaurus Syriacus was his most noted publication.
