| | Deification in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition: A Biblical Perspective by Stephen Thomas A popularly-written study of the biblical roots of the Eastern Orthodox Church’s mystical understanding of the knowledge of God. This unique study brings together the best of contemporary exegesis with the tradition of Eastern Christianity and illustrates the biblical roots of the Eastern Church's understanding of grace as the energy of God. The book presents, in lay terms, the shape for an Orthodox biblical theology for the 21st century and will be of interest to all Christians for whom the Bible is divine revelation and for whom tradition continues to be creative. |
| | Adrian Fortescue and the Eastern Christian Churches by Anthony Dragani Adrian Fortescue (1874-1923) was recognized as one of England’s foremost authorities on Eastern Christianity and helped to shape the English-speaking world’s understanding of the Eastern Churches. This book is a critical examination of his writings on the subject, analyzing what he said about the Eastern Christian Churches and highlighting his insights into key questions. It focuses on Fortescue’s understanding of the schisms and his thoughts as to how reunion can come about. The book concludes by comparing Fortescue's perspective to later advances in theology and historical scholarship in order to ascertain the long-term accuracy of his writings. |
| | American Orthodoxy and Parish Congregationalism by Nicholas Ferencz Orthodox ecclesiology doctrinally and historically requires that all authority in the church be expressed by the bishop. The unity of authority, based upon the laying on of hands, is the lived expression of the oneness and catholicity of the church. American Orthodoxy, however, does not have such an authority structure, especially on the parish level. This study explores the divergence of practice from doctrine in the American church. The study concludes with a theological discussion of the problematic nature of parish congregationalism in Orthodoxy. It points toward the already-realized conciliarity of supra-parish structures as the paradigm for a reformation of parish authority structures. |
| | The Platonic Theology of Ioane Petritsi by Levan Gigineishvili Gigineishvili’s study is a comprehensive exposition of the philosophical system of twelfth-century Georgian Christian Neoplatonist philosopher Ioane Petritsi. Petritsi translated and commented Proclus’ "Elements of Theology" – the first complete translation of this treatise ever made. The translation needed the creation of a philosophic language—a medium for transmitting the extravagant philosophic ideas into Georgian—which Petritsi had effectively achieved. Petritsi both explains intricacies of Proclus’ thought and tries to prove the basic affinity between the Platonic and the Biblical traditions. Gigineishvili exposes the entire system of Petritsi’s thought on a background of ideas of Proclus, other Neoplatonists, and of the Church Fathers. |

This study, undertaken by an Anglican priest with a great interest in the ecumenical dialogue with Eastern Orthodoxy, was an early historical attempt to bring the Russian Church to western eyes. Bishop begins with a history of the Russian Orthodox Church before exploring the worship life of the church, including the ornaments and liturgy of their rites. The faith and practice of the church, its hierarchy and the place of the laity are all clearly presented. Following his summary of this venerable tradition, Bishop adds his own personal impressions and observations about openness to foreign relations and communication with the Church. To ease the understanding of western readers, he includes a statement about missions in the Russian Church, the central portion of the Canon of the Mass, and notes about the Council of Florence, 1438-39.
George Bernard Hamilton Bishop (d. 1918) was vicar of Cardington and an active member of the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association before he was killed in action during World War I. This publication is his only book.
