Widely known as Ta'rikh ibn Wadih, the history compiled by al-Ya’qubi is a classic of Arabic literature. Imbued with a deliberate sense of the joy of story, the narrative was clearly meant to entertain as well as inform. In two volumes, al-Ya’qubi’s preservation of Arabic historical traditions covers the history, especially the religion and literature, of both Islamic and non-Islamic people. The first part of his work explores the pre-Islamic world, and the second part moves the time frame from Muhammad up to 872, the period of al-Ya’qubi’s life. Here we find for the first time the stories of Kalila, Dimna, and Sinbad. Although copiously referenced, this major historical work is often difficult to locate. Presented here in the original Arabic, edited by Houtsma, the text is once more readily available to scholars interested in the view of the world in the centuries immediately after Muhammad.
Ahmad ibn Abu Ya’qub ibn Ja’far ibn Wahb ibn Wadih al-Ya'qubi (d. c. 898) was a geographer and historian. He lived and traveled in Armenia, Khorasan, India, Egypt, and the Maghreb and wrote of his findings.
Martin Theodore Houtsma (1851-1943) was a well-regarded Arabist in the Netherlands. Based at the University of Utrecht, he was one of the co-editors of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Islam. The M. Th. Houtsma Foundation supports further study in fields of interest to its namesake.
