Spurred on by the question of whether Turkey should be given full membership to the European Union, Baum raises the specter of the massacre and torture of Eastern Christians in this nation. The difficulty as understood by the author is the lack of acknowledgment and review of these atrocities. European nations, while not exempt from some of the guilt of past massacres, have opened them to public review and criticism. Given this background, Baum provides an overview of Christianity in Turkey. This overview, not intended to be comprehensive, is laden with the haunting images of the attempt to annihilate Christianity from that country. A cursory history of Turkey up to the nineteenth century is given, and this is supplemented by a detailed account of massacres of Christians during World War I and the reactions of the rest of the world to these religiously motivated killings. The situation is traced up through the War in Cyprus until 1974 and then, briefly, to the modern period. Illustrated with often disturbing images, this work stands to open the eyes of many as they gaze over the forgotten graveyards of the innocent in Turkey.
