St. Cyril of Alexandria, A New Testament Exegete by Lois Farag
This study portrays Cyril of Alexandria as exegete and theologian through an examination of his Commentary on the Gospel John. It begins with an attempt to place Cyril and his commentary within their context. This work argues that Cyril wrote his Commentary on the Gospel of John early in his writing career, almost a decade before becoming bishop. Cyril’s commentary on the Johannine Gospel reveals his exegetical method and his strong Trinitarian theology. The commentary also focuses on the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: the indwelling of the Spirit is the beginning of the newness of life.

Gesenius’ Hebrew Grammar is the essential reference grammar for any student of classical Hebrew. As a mark of its importance this work went through twenty-eight German editions, and it still recommended by Hebrew instructors as an indispensable tool. Gorgias Press is pleased to include this time-honored guide to the Hebrew language in the Gorgias Historical Grammar series. Apart from the thorough explanation given to each aspect of grammar and syntax, this volume contains an exhaustive scriptural index which leads the user directly to passages that stand as examples of difficult constructions. A full paradigm of the Hebrew verb is also included. Gesenius’ grammar has set the bar for all subsequent treatments of the subject.

As an added bonus, the tribute to Gesenius by William Miller, The Influence of Gesenius on Hebrew Lexicography is also included in this volume. The reader is able to learn who this extraordinary figure was as they use his work.

Emil Friedrich Kautzsch (1841-1910) received his education at the University of Leipzig where he later was appointed to the faculty. He eventually received professorships at the Universities of Basel, Tübingen, and finally, Halle. Kautzsch was also notable in that he was one of the founders of the German Palestine Exploration Society. He published other works on Semitic grammar but is best known for his edition of Gesenius’ Grammar.
